Incline and Decline

Acrylic on aluminium
Dimensions: variable – each painting measures 10 x 15 x 2.5 cm
Charlie Warde, 2018

This diptych is a precursor to the CAMEO series, acrylic paintings that build landscapes our of the materials of the built environment, in this case the exposed aggregate concrete used to make Trellick Tower’s heavy Brutalist walls.

Parts of Ernö Goldfinger’s iconic masterpiece are scheduled for demolition to make way for unaffordable housing that will dramatically alter the density and carefully considered flow of the original scheme. Areas of the estate’s curtilage (much of it grade 2 and grade 2 star listed) and landscaped recreational grounds will be lost to the onslaught of gentrification.

The diptych is modular; it is designed to be hung in a variety of ways, depending on its location and according to individual taste.
